The word insult itself is directly causing mental damage to the person. Words are more dangerous, it remains in the person's mind. However physical damage can be treated with.
Now the word assault can be changed to multiple meanings. In this case, mental assault. You're doing mental damage to the person through physical/non-physical contact.
